How care works here

Three phases, and you are told which one you are in

Your schedule of care is written down after the examination and reassessed at every visit. How long it runs depends on what the examination finds, how long you have had the problem, and what you actually want out of it.

Pain relief

Reduce inflammation, break up muscular tension and knots, restore movement in the joints and length in the muscles. This is the part most people come in for.

Postural correction

Redistribute load out of the problem areas and into an even pattern across the body. Treatment in the clinic, a tailored exercise programme here and at home, and retraining the everyday movement habits that caused it, with work on neck, mid-back and core strength so the change holds.

Maintenance

The schedule winds down to occasional checks that protect what you have gained. Health is a long game, not a sprint.

Your first appointment

Forty-five minutes, and you leave knowing what is going on

The first appointment is a health history, a consultation, a full examination and your first treatment. The postural analysis is photographed, and the pictures and results are emailed to you afterwards, so the plan is something you can look at rather than something you have to remember.

Total for that appointment is £80. Treatment sessions after it are £55.

What is assessed and treated

Joints, muscles and nerves, head to foot

Treatment is not limited to the spine. Adjustments are gentle releases of pressure that realign a joint; you may hear a slight popping sound as the gas in the joint releases. Mobilisation and soft tissue work are used alongside them, depending on what suits you.

Elbow pain and tennis elbow are treated where they arise from associated musculoskeletal conditions of the back and neck, not as isolated occurrences. Hip and knee pain from osteoarthritis is treated as an adjunct to core osteoarthritis treatments and exercise.

Feet are part of the examination, not a separate department. If the arches are dropping and rolling in, the ankles, knees, hips and lower back are all carrying it, so heat-moulded orthotic insoles are made here and moved between all your shoes.

The chiropractor

Toby Wragg

Owner and director, and the chiropractor you will see. He graduated with honours from the University of Glamorgan in 2008 and has practised across South West London since, in Ealing and New Malden before sixteen years in Richmond upon Thames.

His interest came out of a lifetime of sport and Tai Chi, competing internationally, where joint alignment, muscle tone and nerve conductivity decide what a body can actually do. That is why the work here does not stop at the symptom: once the pain has gone, the posture and the body mechanics are the thing worth changing.

Questions that come up

How do I find you from Richmond station?

Larkfield Road is a two-minute walk from Richmond station, tucked just behind the church. Number 2 is on the corner: look for the brick porch with the iron gate and the Imperial Health sign on the wall beside it.

Does an adjustment hurt, and what is the popping sound?

An adjustment is a gentle release of pressure that realigns the joint. The sound some people hear is gas releasing inside the joint, not bone on bone. Mobilisation and soft tissue work are used instead where they suit you better, and there are other techniques for different needs, so say what you would rather not have done.

How many appointments will I need?

There is no standard number. Your schedule of care is written for you after the examination and depends on what the examination finds, how severe it is, how long you have had it, how you respond and what your own goals are. It is reassessed at every visit and formally reviewed at intervals, and it changes if your goals change.

Do you see children, or patients who are pregnant?

Yes. Toby is Webster certified and trained in caring for pregnant patients and babies, and the clinic sees all ages, from desk workers and manual workers to athletes and older patients.

What are the orthotic insoles, and do I need a separate pair per shoe?

They are heat-moulded to your own feet here in the clinic, £80 for a pair, and one pair moves between all your shoes. If they are needed at all, they should last for years. Whether they are worth it for you comes out of the foot biomechanics part of the examination.

Can I claim on my health insurance?

All insurers are accepted, but practitioner cover varies between them, so tell us you are registered before your appointment rather than after it and we will help you claim the cost back. Bupa, AXA, Aviva, Vitality, Cigna, WPA, Health Shield and Allianz are all in regular use here.

What if I have to move or cancel an appointment?

Twenty-four hours' notice, please, and ideally rebook within the same day or the next. Appointments missed without that notice may be charged in full, because the slot cannot be given to anyone else at short notice.

Can practitioners rent a room here?

Yes. Three rooms are available, by the hour or full time, with a treatment table, chairs, a sink, WiFi, a waiting area, tea and coffee, wheelchair access and parking. Ask about current rates and availability when you call.
